Well, it's that time again, the magical season of reformatting that seems to have become all the more frequent since I moved to XP. It seems that for every 5 times I install it, one installation will be good, the others will disagree with programs I use, crash at random, or simply be full of weird glitches. I would make the move back to 2K, but XP has a lot of new stuff that I've got used to having, so I guess I'll just have to deal with it, hopefully this install will go right first time (current's been on about 4 weeks, and I've been putting up with strange crashes and glitches such as explorer's treeview not showing icons next to any of the nodes). Wish me luck...

Oh OK, it looks like the power of the system has little to do with the problems. Sorry about the delay in getting back, (I bet this message is just about over).

Yes I've used Microsoft Tech Support, the $35.00 an issue type. They where great, they stayed with me until the problem was fixed, all three hours and two phone calls. I can't say enough good things about them.

OK, I was thinking about going to XP, until I read that article, my system being a PII 700MHz, 512MB RAM, 100BUS I have an old motherboard to Asus P3B-F. But after reading this I have new hope.

Page File = LAG when I got my 1000megs of ram it took my computer 10seconds to shut down before it took 3mins I only wish my system hard drive was more then 1.5gig heheh then I could use Hiber and it would take me 10seconds to reboot woohoo! anyone know how too redirect the Hiber.sys file I got a 80gig media drive (a way without reinstalling xp onto 80gig)

I think those specs for XP are crazy, and they are not Microsoft's specs. I run XP just fine on a pentium III 600mhz with 256 RAM (with all of the Object Desktop stuff running) and have had no problems. (unlike a very similar box running...gasp...ME)

I believe that Microsoft specs are 233mhz (300 recommended) and 128 RAM (a bit different from a 800mhz with 256 RAM)

I did one upgrade, no reformatting and it has worked fine ever since. I upgraded from win2000 pro. System is a Pentium 4 1.4 GHz, 512 Megs of memory, 80 gig harddrive, nVidia Geforce 3. XP seems stable, looks nicer. All games I've played have worked fine, 3D Studio MAX runs smoothly, in fact, everything I've tried runs faster.

I'm glad some of us have good stries to tell. Mine would be good if only there wasn't annoying problems. But I'm sure it'll be fixed soon.

I upgraded from ME, no reformating, and everything is running smooth. It does seem to run faster. Even my scanner runs faster. Figure that out. No crashes. Running a AMD 1.2 GHZ.,768 Megs of RAM with 85 gig hard drive. I'am tickled pink.

feline looks up from piles of paper on desk

whats this? starone needs tickling till she goes pink?

feline thinks i may be able to arrange something
on Apr 18, 2002
Hi Feline, keep your mind on the papers - no tickling needed here. Been a while since I have talked with you. Yes, finally got XP. On the other computer we have ME on the C drive and XP on the D drive. Had to take the other computer in to be fixed because ME totally locked up and we couldn't even get to it to format the drive. Anyway, the person that worked on it set it up that way. However, we have to switch the drives and we are not able to select from a bootup which drive to logon to. And, would you believe, even with the drive re-formatted, ME is still acting up.

I've been running XP Professional on my system, PII 233Mhz, 320Mb Ram, 8Mb Matrox video card and a 3Gb hard drive. No problems at all to report, runs smooth as silk.
on Apr 19, 2002
Well, "smooth". I get the occasional "Windows has run out of resources" and Explorer behaves way below par (locks up and crashes from time to time). But hell, as long as it boots fast, I'm happy.

ME actually NEVER 'acts up'...it was always intended to be as screwy as it is....a resounding success, I'd say...

starone, just remember "format" and "fdisk" are your friends

it sounds like that machine needs a slightly more stern approach. personally i would just backup the data, fdisk both drives, and then install XP on its own. fairly quick and painless once you have done the fdisk stage.

is this why you have been so mysteriously absent of late?

Well, between installing XP and trying to get this skin done and family matters, been pretty tied up. Hubby has really gotten involved in all this too. It's gotten to where he gets me up and says, "You are wasting valuable skinning time." When I started doing this he remarked "why are you wasting your time?" Go figure.

I'm sure he will be interested in the fdisk method. I think he is just about to throw ME away. Only thing is I would really like to keep it just to be able to bring my skins up on ME to see how they look there in addition to XP. Somehow feel hopelessly lost not being able to look at XP and ME.
